Hi Again,

This makes interesting reading. Bowel Cancer Awareness site.

People are tempted to regard Bowel and Rectal and Colon cancer as the same thing. When as far as I am aware Rectal is 12 cms from the anus and the rest is Bowel. Both are colon and are more classed as colorectal . Both had different treatments until Avastin came along. I won't bore you with the details so if you want to know more do a search.

From conversation with people at the hospital the distribution of this type of cancer is more on people over 50 with fewer numbers of people under 50. I was an exception.

Here is the main points from the Bowel Cancer Awareness site. It is now "My Links" on the right.
  • Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK.
  • Only lung cancer kills more people.
  • 35,500 people will be diagnosed with the disease this year, and around half of these will die.
  • But the good news is - it is one of the most curable cancers if caught early enough.

Maybe it is time for the Irish people to join the people of the UK to step up the awareness with the politicians here.

I don't want to be a alarmist but here are some more facts that I came upon reading on the web.

  • Causes of colonatal cancer (Bowel and Rectal) is 90% dietary and 10% hereditary
  • Currently 1 in 18 people will develop colorectal cancer.
  • 54% of sufferers currently survey did not see the GP until the cancer had spread.
  • 75% of the same survey said they had not seen or read anything relating to the disease in the past year.

In hindsight If I had known what to look for and had eaten a healthier diet. I might not be in the situation I am in now.

We are embarking on a new healthy eating regime in the "Man" household here in Ireland and one of the major subject on the agenda is to stop eating meat products. Especially meat itself. The boys will not like this but we will gradually phase meat out of our diet and replace it with more healthy options. We will discuss- as a family-all the information that is available to us to help us decide on maintaining a more healthier lifestyle.

That's enough ranting for now..

Later,

Sai
